9/44   + 17/36       we  need to find a common denominator between 44 and 36

Note that 44 factors as 4 X 11

And 36 factors as 4 X 9     

So.....taking each different factor found in both numbers and multiplying them together, we get  4 x 9 x 11  = 36 x 11 = 396....and this is the common denominator

So  9/44  =  [9 x 9]/[11 x 4 x 9] =  81/396

And   17/36  =  [17 x 11]/ [11 x 4 x 9]  =  187/396

So we have ........     81/396 + 187/396  =  268/396    .... and  since both numerator and denominator are even, we can divide them by 2 ....and we get....

134/198     and we can divde both by 2, again....and we get

NB = 2√3   AB = 4√3  .......and by the Pythagorean Theorem.........

AN = √[(AB)^2 - (NB)^2]  =   √[(4√3)^2  -  (2√3)^2 ]  = √[48 - 12] = √36  = 6

Here's (b)....it's pretty much an extension of (a)

1000/7 = 142 numbers that have at least 1 factor of 7

1000/49 = 20 numbers that have at  an additional factor of 7

1000/343 =  2 numbers that have a third factor of 7

So.........    142 + 20 + 1 =  163

And 7^163 will divide 1000!   ...so n = 163

99^2   = 9801.....this is the greatest four digit square

b )   8x + 11y = 97      ....I'm with Melody, here......"trial and error" might be the shortest distance between two points, since the numbers are small

Note that  x can't be greater than 12 and y can't be greater than 8 ....  and y must be odd because 8x is always even.....and the only way to get an odd (97, in this case) is to add an odd to an even....

When y = 3, x = 8

And y can't be 1, 5 or 7

So.... 8 "8" confusions and 3 "11" confusions seem to work.......
