Toys and colors and toys and play had an equal number of lollipops. After toys and colors gave away 20 lollipops and toys and play gave away 24 lollipops, toys and colors had 2 times as many lollipops as toys and play. How many lollipops did each have at first?

I can't be certain but I am going to assume Toys and colors, and Toys and play are each their own entity.  I am going to use A for the total amount of lollipops they had, colors on the right and play on the left

Using the word problem I find that

A-24=2(A-20)

I start by multiplying the two in

A-24=2A-40

Then I isolate the A

16=A

So you answer is A.
