After each girl spent the same amount of money, they were left with:

Mary => 5/7(488 + x)             Rachel => 2x/5

Amount of money each girl spent:

Mary => 2/7(488 + x)              Rachel => 2x/5

2/7(488 + x) = 2x/5

x = 1220
