I think I might know. He first found the area of the whole circle and multiplied it by 150/360 (to find the area of the sector) and then subtracted the area of the triangle.
Yep! I at first tried to use an equation but when I just graphed it out in my head, it became so obvious! :)

At first glance, the answer might seem like 8, but this is a wrong assumption.
This is because the numbers 9 and 18 hold two nines!
so we need to add two to 8 to have 10 as our answer.
