I think I might know. He first found the area of the whole circle and multiplied it by 150/360 (to find the area of the sector) and then subtracted the area of the triangle.

You can find the area of the triangle by using the formula:  Area  =  ½·a·b·sin(C)

I was hoping there was some non-trig way. Most of the math I do doesn't involve trig, and so I'm not very good at it.

Area of sector   As = [(r²pi) /360°] * 150° = 1011.645194 in²

 

Area of triangle   At = [ sin(15°) * 27.8] * [ cos(15°) * 27.8 ] = 193.21 in²

 

Shaded area       A = As - At = 818.435194 in²   indecision
