OK......let's multiply the second equation by -1 all the way through...so we have....
-[ y = -(1/4)x -3 ] → -y = (1/4)x +3
Now add this equation to the first one......so we have
y = (1/2)x +3
-y = (1/4)x +3
-------------------
0 = (3/4)x + 6
Subtract 6 from both sides
-6 = (3/4)x multiply both sides by 4/3
-24/3 = x = -8
Now......just replace this value in one of the equations to get "y"...I''ll use the ffirst one...
y = -(1/2)(-8) + 3
y = -4 + 3
y = -1
And there's the solution !!!
