Melody meant to say that x = 5 rather than 11.....

I think this person wants to write an equation of a line using the slope and a point. We will actually have the same answer as Melody....it will just look a little different!!!

So using the point-slope form, we have

y - y₁ = m(x - x₁)       where m is the slope and (x₁, y₁) is the given point   ..... so we have

y - 2 = 3(x - 1)          add 2 to each side and distribute the "3" across the terms in the parentheses

y = 3x - 3 - 2            simplify

y = 3x - 5                 

Note.....putting our given values of 2 and 1 in for x and y will make this equation true.....so we know we have done things correctly !!!

I like to explain it in this manner:

Suppose we have a  30 gallon bucket half full of water that has a hole in the bottom.. And water leaks out of the bucket at one gallon per minute  →   (-1) gallon per minute.

And suppose that time going forward is positive, and time going backward is negative.

So, five minutes from now, the bucket will contain (-1)*(5) = -5 gallons less than it does now.

But, 10 minutes ago, the bucket contaned (-1)*(-10) = 10 gallons more than it does now.

So, in the first case, a negative times a positive is a negative. And in the second case, a negative times a  negative is a positive !!!!

Getting a common denominator on the left, we have

(11/30)x = 11/6   .....   and 11/6 = 55/30   .....so we have...

(11/30)x = (55/30)    and since the denominators are the same, we can solve for the numerators

11x = 55         divide both sides by 11

x = 5  

Anonymous is correct......how didhe/she arrive at that???

Note that 703 factors as 19 x 37, and since both factors are prime, there is no further factorization possible.

So, either 19 members get $37 each.....or......37 members get $19 each.......and since the problem specifies more than 20 members, the second scenario is the correct one.....

We've already "found" x........this is asking us to evaluate the function when x = - 5...so we have.....

(-5)^2 - 8(-5) =

25 + 40 = 65

Let's try this again.............

Note that we have......

 xy + 5 = x + 7    now....just subtract 5 from both sides....

       -5 =      -5

xy        =  x + 2   

Now...I want to get rid of the x on the right side.....so I can just subtract it from both sides...so we have

xy       =  x + 2

     -x      -x

------------------

xy - x  =        2         Notice how the x "disappeared from the right and ended up on the left as a "negative??"

Now...I just want to "factor the x on the left out of both terms....so we have....

x(y - 1)  = 2       do you see that???

So this is like having

x * (y - 1)  = 2        and since I want the "x" by itself on the left....we can divide both sides by  (y - 1)

So

x* (y - 1)/(y-1)  = 2/(y-1)      and the (y -1)s on the left "cancel" leaving us with......

x   =   2/(y - 1)     !!!!

I believe you want to know the hourly rate.

Note that 75km/ 50 min  = 1.5km/min

So, since there are 60 minutes in an hour, take this rate and multiply it by 60.

So we have.....

1.5km/min * 60min   = 90 km........so....she travels 90km/hr
