I think you could solve this using the Gaussian elimination, but I haven't fully understood how it works because I just started learning about matrices.

Working out
1.4-0.4(t-3.1)=5.8
1.4-0.4t+1.24+5.8
t+1.24=5.8
t=8.8-1.24
t=4.56
That would be a goog idea, but this post is old so I doubt that would happen.
