20 - x - 10 seems to be the equation you're stating, but it cannot be solved, since x is equal to nothing.

Place value is the easiest way without a calculator:

    8000

+80000

  88000

You just add the numbers together vertically from right to left.

One way, as Anon mentioned, is the number scale:

0 _ -1 _ -2 _ -3 _ -4 _ -5

                    -1    -2    -3

By subracting three times, we get -5.

An easier way is one of the rules for integers: When you combine negative numbers, you just add them like normal positive numbers and keep the negative.

So since 2 + 3 = 5,

-2 -3 = -5

The answer is very useful, but the method is the important part:

We start with -51.38

This is the same as -51 38/100 because decimals are in powers of ten, and the hundreths digit is out of 100.

Now all we have to is simplify the fraction part: 38/100 ÷ 2/2 = 19/50.

And there we have our answer: -51 19/50

The next number is 1.0404...

To convert it to a fraction, first we have to find the part repeating, which is 04.

Next we put that over as many nines as there are digits, so: 04/99

Since that can't be simplified any more, we have our answer: 1 4/99

I just realized that the answer doesn't make sense; shouldn't the side be less than the diameter to fit within the circle?

Just one final question. Can you explain it without Trigonmetry (cosines)? I haven't learned that yet.

Can you give me the formula, and then the explanation? And also how to get an appriximation of the answer? I'm confused by your explanation (Probably because I'm unfamiliar with Cosines.)
