One way, as Anon mentioned, is the number scale:
0 _ -1 _ -2 _ -3 _ -4 _ -5
-1 -2 -3
By subracting three times, we get -5.
An easier way is one of the rules for integers: When you combine negative numbers, you just add them like normal positive numbers and keep the negative.
So since 2 + 3 = 5,
-2 -3 = -5
Use the number scale.
-2 --3
if you count backwards 3 from negative 2, you'll get -5 for an answer.
Hope this helps!
