One way, as Anon mentioned, is the number scale:

0 _ -1 _ -2 _ -3 _ -4 _ -5

                    -1    -2    -3

By subracting three times, we get -5.

An easier way is one of the rules for integers: When you combine negative numbers, you just add them like normal positive numbers and keep the negative.

So since 2 + 3 = 5,

 

-2 -3 = -5

Use the number scale.

 

-2 --3

 

if you count backwards 3 from negative 2, you'll get -5 for an answer.
