You started off well, but you came to the wrong conclusion.

"(-4.2 + 5.6)=1.4"

While...

"(1.2 - -4.2)=5.4"

In other words...

"(1.2 - 5.4)=-4.2"

Question...: "How can I get to 1.2 form -4.2?"
Answer...: "(-4.2 + 5.4)=1.2"

If as you say, there's a total of 27 students.

And that 18 of them plays Basketball, 16 of them plays Baseball.
Collectively that equals a 1 in 27 choice, but only a 24/27 chance that one of them plays either sport.
But per sport, there's a 18 in 27 chance that the one picked would play Basketball.

Whilst there is a marginally smaller chance that the one picked would play Baseball, with 16 in 27 chance of that being the case.

As a side note...

There's a 3 in 27 chance that the one being picked would play neither sport.

Two hints/tips for you to solve this equation.

Nr.1.

First of all reverse the order so that "X" always ends up on the left side.

Square out the exponential value.

(Example...: "(2^16)=(4^8)=(16^4)=(256^2)=(256*256)=?"

The rest is simple math.

Here is an alternative solution to the problem.

The numbers in the problem are "(3/5)" and "7 and (1/2)".

The fraction "(3/5)" is ok as is.
The fraction "7 and (1/2)" equals "(15/2)".

It's very easy to tell that the LCD is 10.
And thus...

(3/5)=(10/(3/5))=(6/10) per Bow.

...and...

(15/2)=(10/(15/2))=(75/10) Ribbon in total.

In turn...

((75/10)/(6/10))=(75/((10*6)/10))=(75/6)

...and...

((75/6)/3)=(25/2)
Finally...
(25/2)=12.5 Bows in total.

Hi there...

Justin runs a 100meter race.
Justin reaches his maximum speed after running 35m in 7s.

After which he runs an additional "35m in 5s". <<---(Maximum speed).

For the next 2s he runs "X"m.

Which adds up to "(35m+"X"m)" in 9s and/or "(35m+((3/4)"X"m))" in 8.5s, away from the starting line.

PS...:

Unless you are meant to calculate acceleration, the first two lines are pretty useless calculation wise.
The only useful thing it tells you is "the distance from the starting line".
And that it was after this point in the race that he had reached his maximum speed, but it doesn't indicate the maximum speed.
For that you have to look at line three...
After that it's pretty simple math.
