How are you going to know how to do these on a test if you don't know the explanation??  

We can use the Pythagorean theorem to do this problem. The Pythagorean theorem says

a² + b²  =  c²      , where  " a "  and  " b "  are legs of a right triangle, and  " c " is the hypotenuse.

They tell us the legs are  264  and  495  .   So...

264² + 495²  =  c²              Multiply  264 * 264  to get  69,696  and  495 * 495  to get  245,025 .

69,696 + 245,025  =  c²     Add them

314,721  =  c²                    Take the positive square root of both sides.

561  =  c

√[ 9/16 ]     =     √9 / √16     =     3/4

You know you have been doing too much math when you're driving down the highway and see a sign that says " LEFT LN CLOSED, " and instinctively read it as "left natural log closed"  .

y varies directly with x,  so  y = kx   , where  k  is some constant.

y  =  kx        When  y = 75 ,  x = 1/2 .   So

75  =  k(1/2)       Multiply both sides by  2 .

150  =  k

                          So...

y  =  150x

To find  y  when  x = 2\(\frac{1}{4}\)  , plug in  2\(\frac14\)  for  x .

y  =  150( 2\(\frac14\) )        1/4 = 0.25 ,  so  2 + 1/4 = 2.25

y  =  150( 2.25 )

y  =  337.5

12w  =  12 / 7         Divide both sides of this equation by  12 .

12w /12  =  (12 / 7) /12

w  =  1 / 7

Try typing in  " abs() "

For example,    abs(-3)

2x + 5  =  3

                                    Subtract  5  from both sides of the equation.

2x + 5 - 5  =  3 - 5

                                    2x + 5 - 5 = 2x   and   3 - 5 = -2

2x  =  -2

                                    Divide both sides of the equation by  2 .

2x/2  =  -2/2

                                    2x/2 = x     and     -2/2 = -1

x  =  -1

You can plug this back into the original equation to see if it is true.

2(-1) + 5  =  3   ?

-2 + 5  =  3      This is true.

=  -24(3x² - 4) / 8  +  24(-3x² + 4) / 3  -  24(-6x² + 7) / 12     Reduce.

=  -3(3x² - 4)  +  8(-3x² + 4)  -  2(-6x² + 7)          Distribute the number outside each parenthesees.

=  -9x² + 12  +  -24x² + 32  -  -12x² - 14          

=  -9x² + 12  -  24x² + 32  +  12x² - 14              Combine like terms.

=  -21x² + 12 + 32 - 14

=  -21x² + 30
