An alternate and more algebraic approach is to take the fact and 4 peaches=.50 dollars and make a proportion.  It would look like

$x/20 peaches=$0.50/4 peaches

Multiply both sides by 20 to solve for x

x=20(.5)/4=5(.5)=2.5

Lets start at the base and work our wau up.

We know 4 peaches costs half a dollar

That means 8 peaches would be one whole dollar

add four more peaches and we see that 12 peaches costs $1.50

This means 16 peaches would add another half dollar so now we are at $2.00

Adding four more adds another half dollar so 20 peahces costs $2.50, a strikingly good deal!

Let's add 2x to both sides and subtract 9 from both sides tog et

3x=9  

Now we divide by 3 on both sides

x=3

The reason this looks so challenging is because we are dealing with two different bases, 4 and 2.  The good news is that it is relatively simple to convert our base 4 to base 2 because 2^2=4

It looks like this

(2^2)^(x+5)=2^(3x+1)

we have a common base now but need to simplify the left side of the equation

2^(2(x+5))=2^(3x+1)

2^(2x+10)=2^(3x+1)

now that we have a common base on both sides of the equation it must be the case that our exponents are equivalent.

2x+10=3x+1

10=x+1

9=x

The only thing missing here is the frequency of compunding.  Are you compounding monthly? yearly? continuously?

Always remember that percent means "out of 100".  That means the 40%=40/100=.4

so 40% of 120 is equivalent to .4(120)=48

we are looking to mutiply or distribute the seven.  The most important thing here is that we remember that each term inside the parentheses is multiplied by seven.  It looks like

When you say "solve" I assume you're looking for a value of x that makes the two equations equal so my response will be regarding that goal.

First set the two equations equal to one another

R(x)=C(x)

60x-.4x^2=3x+13

Let's move all of our terms to the right side so our quadratic term is positive

0=.4x^2 -57x+13

From here you will want to use the quadratic formula to find your answer(s).
