No cake takes 4 hours in the oven to bake. Therefore, each cake takes one hour in the oven. Since you have 8 cakes, it will take 8 hours. Please correct me if I'm wrong other members on 2.0calc.

A quadratic equation is a non-linear relationship between x and y. 

For the secod part of your equation where you wonder is it meant to solve for 0, that's isn't always the case.

The reason sometimes a quadratic equation will be equal to 0, is when you are looking for the x-intercepts of your parabola. The reason why it's equal to 0 when you look for the x-intercepts is because the x-intercepts are always on the x-axis. Any point on the x-axis has a y-value of 0. This is why when we look for the x-interecepts, the y value is set to 0. We are solving for x when y = 0. 

4n^2 + 9n + 5 = 0

ab = 20, a+b = 9

5 and 4 work because 5x4=20, 5+4=9

4n^2 + 4n + 5n + 5 = 0

common factor

4n(n+1) + 5(n+1)=0

(4n+5)(n+1)=0

4n+5 = 0, n+1 = 0

n = -5/4, n=-1

x +1/x = 13/6

multiply both sides by 6x (common factor)

6x^2 + 6 = 13x

6x^2 -13x + 6 = 0

solve using quadratic formula

x = 2/3 x = 3/2

therefore 2/3 + 3/2 = 13/6 and 3/2 + 2/3 = 13/6

ratio of your first triangle is 7-24-25 (it's a pythagorean triple, you could also find 25 using pythagoreon thereom) 

ratio of bigger tirangle is x:x:100. To get from 25 to 100, x4. 7 x 4 = 28, 24 x 4 = 96

The ratio of your bigger triangle is 28 : 96 : 100

The shorter leg value of the second triangle is 28

Great response! I have somewhat of an understanding of how you got the answer 1. I have also realized from this question that the materials necessary to solve it have not been taught at the grade 10 level, and am a little mad at my math teacher. I really was stuck on this one, great explanation once again!

[ (3/2) (a - b) ] / [ a - b ]  =    3/2

I don't understand the bolded out part, as in how you went from [ (3/2)(a + 5]  -  (3/2)(b) + 5] / [ a - b] to the next part..
