400,000 x 4,000,000

First you have to know how to write those big numbers down.

now 4x4=16 and altogether there are 5+6=11 zeros
so the answer is 16 followed by 11 zeros.

1,600,000,000,000

Which is 1,600 billion if you are from the US
or
1.6 billion if you are Australian.
the US billion is different from the Australian billion.
that is why it is better so use scientific notation for such big numbers.

I'm having trouble typing in tan^-1 on this calculator. I have no idea what button to press in order to switch it from regular tan to that.

It will probably be very obvious to you when I explain that inverse tan and arctan are the same thing. arctan is abbreviated to atan

so you just hit the second function like you do on most calculators
OR
you can press tan and hold it a little longer than usual and it will change to atan.

= 3(9x+12)-1(2x+5)
= 3*9x + 3*12 - 1*2x - 1*5
=27x + 36 - 2x - 5
You son should be able to finish it from here.

Some hints
multiplying a bracket by a negative number always has the effect of changing the sign of term within the bracket.
-(x+5) = -x-5
-(4x-8) = -4x+8
-2(-x+12) = 2x-24
etc

Next time you ask a question could you please put the question in the body of the text. Otherwise it can be mistaken as a nothing question.
you can put the question in the title as well if you want to. That is usually quite helpful.

Hi random maths guy,

imo (in my opinion) it isn't. But it is so large that it is beyond the comprehension of the human mind (my mind anyway).

And it is too large to be written in any normal notation. So calculators say it is infinity.

I'd be quite interested if another mathematician comments on this.

That is one of the reasons I like it in here. I can answer most questions easily but some make me think.

Sometimes I am thinking about the mathematics and sometimes i am thinking about how best to teach it. I am very interested in both these slants.
