Same with the girls.

So you have not treated the children as individuals, you have only cared about their gender.

If the scale factor of the area is 1:3

then the scale factor of the side length is 1:sqrt(3)

so

\(\frac{\sqrt3}{1}=\frac{12}{2x-16}\)

now solve it for yourself.

Consider this

y=x^2    vertex is (0,0)

now consider  y=(x-3)^2      where is the the new vertex.

They can certainly be interpreted as different but I would want the difference to be made more clear than this!

I think what they mean is:

the first one means cut a 1 cm square in half.    (It will be a rectangle with sides 0.5cm and  1cm)

The second one probably refers to a square with a side length of 0.5cm

Add them together.

What is 5 2 1 %  meant to mean.
