Maybe you were wondering what the value of d is?

10-3d=4           ---Subtract 10 from both sides

-3d=-6              ---Multiply bth sides by a negative (negative times negative = positive)

3d=6               ---Divide btoh sides by 3

d = 2

9 ÷ 3 = 3

You can't divide anything by 3 and 8 and get a whole number, so 3 is the GCF of 9 and 24.

We can set this up as an algebraic equation. X will equal the distance from the side of the door to the towel bar.

2x + 8 1/4 = 26 1/3

2x +33/4 = 79/3           ---Multiply the first fraction by 3/3 and the second by 4/4 to get a common denimiator.

2x + 99/12 = 316/12           ---Subtract 99/12 from both sides

2x = 217/12                      ---Divide both sides by 2

x = 217/12 ÷ 2             ---Dividing is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal

x = 217/12 * 1/2
