if we represent the price of 1 t-shirt with t and the price of 1 hat with h, we'll have;

5t + h = 27 ....1st equation

2t + h = 12 ....2nd equation

 

if we subtract the 2nd equation from the 1st equation, we'll get;

3t + 0h = 15

 

which is;

3t = 15

 

now we can get t as;

t = 15/3 = 5 -> remember that t is the price of 1 t-shirt, therefore, 1 t-shirt is 5 euros

 

to find the price of a hat, we'll simply substitute the price of 1 t-shirt in one of the equations, say, equation 2;

2(5) + h = 12

making h the subject,

h = 12 - 10 = 2

hence the price of 1 hat is 2 euros
