A barrel of water is 7/10 full. After 243 litres are removed, the barrel is 1/4 full. How many litres does the barrel hold when its full?

Let y = full barrel:

7y/10 - 243 = y/4

Multiply by each denominator to all numbers:

28y - 9720 = 10y

Rearrange:

18y = 9720

And solve:

y = 540 litres
