why is a negative number squyared coming up negitive rather than positive?
A negative number squared should be a positive. Why is the calculator showing a negative?
Put the negative number in parenthesis. The calculator reads it as the square, then the opposite. So -22 will yield -4, but (-2)2 should yield 4.
If the number is a coefficient to i, or \(\sqrt{-1}\)
the number squared will be negative.
Guest answerer, good knowledge of the order of operations! I commonly make the mistake of putting negatives with a number being squared.
