A research ship lowers a probe into the ocean to explore an underwater trench. The probe starts on a crane 17 feet above the surface and is lowered at a rate of 10.4 feet per minute. Write an expression for the depth of the probe after m minutes. What is the depth of the probe after 60 minutes?

I'm using the convention that the water surface lies at "0"...thus, above the surface is "positive" and below the surface is "negative"...so we have

d = 17 - 10.4m       where d is the depth after m minutes

The depth after 60 minutes is

17 - 10.4(60)  =  -607   = 607 ft below the surface

First, multiply 10.4 x 60. Then add the additional 17 feet.

17+10.4x=60
