A seagull is gliding 74 1/2 feet above the surface of the water. It then dives 80 feet to catch a fish. How many feet below the surface of the water does the seagull dive?

it could be 5.5 [5 1/2]  or 5 im really not good at math but he's right it could be expressed as a negitive but thats not really the right format or whatever

if the is 74and  1/2 in the air you would subtract 74 and 1/2 from 80 wich would be 6 and a 1/2 so i think the answer would equal 6 and 1/2

You're close, maththis.......

If he's at 74.5 ft and he dives 80 ft...shouldn't we get a negative answer???

As, Melody says......try it again.....

..........................................................................................................................................................

Let me amend this slightly......your answer actually could be expressed as a positive.....it's just that your math is a little "off"

NO it shouldn't be negative Chris.    NOT for the way the question is phrased.

can't you work it out maththis?

Its 80 - 74.5

80-74=6

80-74.5 must be less than 6    Don't you think so?

If we said 5.5ft below the water surface....we'd be correct

If we considered the top of the water to be "0" and you said -5.5ft, I would understand that, too....

Either way.........you got the correct answer.....5.5

We won't dwell on semantics......

I am trying to be nice!

I certainly do not think that you are stupid!

Most of these questions get answered by the same few people.

It is great when other people like yourself also offer some answers.

Don't be upset with CPhill. He is a really nice guy. He thought you were abusing me and he just came to my defense.  I think that is really sweet.  :))

Thanks Chris :)

Oh, the decoder ring was a joke. :)
