John had some marbles. He lost \( {2 \over 7}{}{}\) of the marbles and gave 48 marbles to his

friends. He was then left with \( {1\over 3}{}{}\)of the marbles. He packed these into 10 packets.
Some of the packets contained 3 marbles while the rest contained 5 marbles.

     (a) How many marbles were packed into the 10 packets?

     (b) How many packets contained 3 marbles?

x = original count of marbles

   losing 2/7ths means he has 5/7 ths of original left

5/7 x - 48 = 1/3 x

x = 126

at the end he has 1/3 of the original amount = 42 marbles

   3   3    3    3   +   5   5   5   5  5  5
