Case 1:
x^2 - 3x + 2 = 1

With the quadratic formula, x = 3/2 + sqrt(5)/2 or x = 3/2 - sqrt(5)/2.
Case 2:
x^2 - 3x + 2 = -1
x^2 - 3x + 3 = 0
If you applied the quadratic formula, there wouldn't be any real answers.
