Theodore had 24 baseball cards. He sells 1/4 of his cards to Tom, 1/3 of his cards to Larry. How many baseball cards does Theodore have left?
This doesn't seem like algebra... (imo)
Theodore has 24 baseball cards and sells 1/4 of them to Tom.
1/4 of 24 is 6.
So he sells 6 to Tom.
24-6 = 18. Theodore has 18 cards left.
Sells 1/3 of those, and 1/3 of 18 is also 6.
Subtract 16: 18 - 6 = 12.
So Theodore has 12 cards left.
This is a poorly worded problem......it does not say that he gave 1/3 of what was left after giving 1/4 away.....who knows what is meant by
'He sells 1/4 of his cards to Tom, 1/3 of his cards to Larry.' I interpreted it as he gave 1/4 of total and 1/3 of total ....then how much is left?
you interpreted it as gives 1/4 then gives 1/3 of the remainder to Larry..... both of our answers are correct !
Yeah. The problem was poorly worded. It depends on whether he meant 1/3 of what was left, or 1/3 of all his cards.
