the roots are x = -7 and x = 8:

\((x+7)(x - 8)\)

\(= x^2 + 7x - 8x - 56\)

\(= x^2 - x - 56\)

 

(This expression can be expanded by using FOIL: First, Outer, Inner, Last.)

 

Because our equation's x^2 coefficient is already equal to 1, our answer is x^2 - x - 56 = 0.
