If x^2 + 1/x^2 = 171, what is the positive value of x - 1/x?

a = x - 1/x

a^2 = x^2 - 2 + 1/x^2

x^2 + 1/x^2 = 171

a^2 = 171 - 2

a^2 = 169

\(a = \pm 13\)
