When a fraction of 12 is taken away from 17, what remains exceeds one-third of seventeen by six.

Please don't solve the equation just give me the sentence becuase i've been stuck on it for a while.

OK....this IS a little tough

A  "fraction of 12" can be represented  as  (1/x)*12

Taking this away from  17   is      17  -  (1/x)*12

So we have

[ 17 - (1/x)*12 ]    -  (1/3)*17    =   6
