A stereo is being installed in a room with a rectangular floor measuring 14' x 12' and an 11 foot ceiling, with a speaker in the corner of ceiling on opposite end of room Running a wire from the amplifier to the speaker (not through the air, but along the walls or the floor), what is the shortest amount of wire I can use, in feet?

where exactly is the stereo located? Suppose your room is ABCD and the speaker is up in the corner at B.

The stereo is located at the opposite corner from where the wire would begin to be ran. So if each corner were marked with a letter, ABCD, then let's say the stereo is in Corner A and the speaker is located in Corner C, on the ceiling. Does that help?

yes.

You have to go from the stereo down to the floor, along the long side of the room, then along the short side, then up the ceiling.

That's

a + 14 + 12 + 11 = 37 + a where a is the height of the stereo off the ground. You don't specify it in the problem. Maybe it's 0.

If you allow the wire to cross the floor diagonally then you'd have, because of the Pythagorean theorem,

a + sqrt(14^2 + 12^2) + 11 = a + sqrt(340) + 11 ~ 29.4 + a
