At the end of a snowstorm, Jeremiah had 17 inches of snow on his lawn. The temperature then increased and the snow began to melt at a constant rate of 0.5 inches per hour. Assuming no more snow was falling, how much snow would Jeremiah have on his lawn 3 hours after the snow began to melt? How much snow would Jeremiah have on his lawn after t hours of snow melting?
After 3 hours, there would be 12 inches of snow.
After t hours, there would be 18 - 2t inches of snow.
I don't think that is right. If the snow melts at a rate of 0.5 inches per hour, after three hours it would have melted 3*0.5=1.5 inches. Then there would be 17-1.5=15.5 or 31/2 inches of snow. After t hours, if t < 34, there would be 17-0.5t or 17-t/2 inches left. If t is at least 34, then the answer is 0, because you cannot have a negative amount of snow.
