I remember using this website last year but I forgot my name and password so oh well. I believe I remember someone named CPhill or something like that. Anyways,
Three players scored a total of 70 points during a basketball game. One player scored twice as many as one teammate and 10 points fewer than the other teammate. How many points did each player score?
Let Player1 = x
Player2 = 2x (he scored twice as many points as player1)
Player3 = 2x+10 (because player2 scored 10 points less than him)
x + 2x + 2x+10 = 70 points
5x + 10 =70
5x = 60
x = 12 Player2 = 24 Player3=34
Call the points scored by one player, x
Call the points scored by another player, 2x
Call the points scored by the third player, x - 10
So we have
x + 2x + x - 10 = 70 simplify
4x - 10 = 70 add 10 to both sides
4x = 80 divide both sides by 4
x = 20
2x = 2(20) = 40
x - 10 = 20 - 10 = 10
So the three players scored 10, 20 and 40 points, respectively
