A box with a square base and open top must have a volume of 389344 cm3cm3. We wish to find the dimensions of the box that minimize the amount of material used.

First, find a formula for the surface area of the box in terms of only xx, the length of one side of the square base.

formula= x^2+1557376/x

 

length of the side of the sq bottom is 92 cm

If the volume is 389344 and the base is a 92 x 92 square, then the 

height = 389344 / (922)  =  46.

 

The area is:  4 x (92 x 46)  + (92 x 92)  =  25392 cm2
