First find the mean =    [ 6 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 4 ] / 5   =  28 / 5

 

Take the sum of the squared differences from each data value and the mean  and take the average of these

 

So we have

 

 [(6 - 28/5)^2 + ( 8 - 28/5)^2 + (1 - 28/5)^2 + (9 - 28/5)^2 + (4 - 28/5)^2 ]  / 5  =

 

206 /25   =

 

8.24 = the variance
