3. Evaluate f(x) = −2x
4. Evaluate f(x) = −3x + 2 for -3 < x < 1.
5. A commuter van company charges passengers $1.00 for a ride, no matter how long the ride is, and an
additional $0.35 for each mile traveled. The rule c = 0.35m + 1.00 describes the relationship
between the number of miles m and the total cost of the ride c.
a. What is the charge for a 1-mile ride?
b. What is the charge for a 27-mile ride?
Use the vertical line test to determine whether the relation is a function.
6. {(−1,− 3), (−3,− 5), (−3, 0), (4, 5)}
7. {(−3,− 1), (1,− 4), (4, 2), (5, 4)}
8. {(−2, 3), (−5,− 3), (4, 5), (1, 3)}
9. Evaluate f(x) = − 1
10. A taxi company charges passengers $5.25 for a ride, no matter how long the ride is, and an additional
$3.25 for each mile traveled. The rule c = 3.25m + 5.25 describes the relationship between the
number of miles m and the total cost of the ride c.
a. What is the charge for a 5-mile ride?
b. What is the charge for a 8.3-mile ride?
2 − 2 for -2 < x < 2.
x for -1 < x < 3.

5) 1 mile ride = .035(1) + 1.00 = $1.35
27 mile ride = .035(27) + 1.00 = $10.45
6) {(−1,− 3), (−3,− 5), (−3, 0), (4, 5)} not a function.....one x value (-3) is associated with two diffeent y values
7) {(−3,− 1), (1,− 4), (4, 2), (5, 4)} function .....no x value is associated with more than one y
8) {(−2, 3), (−5,− 3), (4, 5), (1, 3)} function .....no x value is associated with more than one y
10)....this is similar to (5)
5 mile ride = 3.25(5) + 5.25 = $21.50
8.3 mile ride = 3.25(8.3) + 5.25 = $32.23 [rounded]
Haley, I'm not sure about the rest....just because the questions asked are a little unclear....but I'll give some of them a shot
3. Evaluate f(x) = −2x there's nothing here to "evaluate".....it's just the graph of this line with a slope of -2 going through the origin....
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/rrgtjvsc2x
9. Evaluate f(x) = − 1 again, there's nothing to "evaluate"....it's the graph of a vertical line at x = -1
Here's the graph......
4. Evaluate f(x) = −3x + 2 for -3 < x < 1
I assume they want you to put integer values between -3 and 1 into this and "crank out" the answers......I'll do the first one....so we have... -3(-2) + 2 = 6 + 2 = 8
You can finish the rest....just put in -1 and evaluate this.......and then put in 0 and do the same thing
