when carla looked out at the school Parking Lot,she noticed that for every 2 mini vans, there were 5 other tyPes of vehicles. if there are 161 vehicles in the Parking lot, how many of them are not mini vans?

This is a ratio so 2:5 

 

2 + 5 = 7 

 

How many 7s go into 161?

Group them into lots of 2+5 = 7

 

There are 161/7 = 23 lots all together.  In each of these 23 lots there are 5 non-mini-vans, so there are 23*5 = 115 vehicles that aren't mini vans.
