Your only job over the summer is to water the lawn. You’re lucky because you have a sprinkler system
that does it for you. Unfortunately, the system stopped working in May and you never checked it. Your
rectangular lawn is 25ft by 50 ft. and the only sprinkler that worked is in a corner. It shot 15ft.

a) What is the area of the dead grass?

b) To keep from getting in trouble, you decided to put a fence around the live grass to make it look
like you did it on purpose. How long is the fence?

(A)  area  =  (1/4) circle  with a radius of 15 ft  =  (1/4)pi (15^2)  = (225/4) pi ft^2

(B)  length of fence  =  (1/4)  of circumference of a circle with a radius of 15 ft  =  (1/4) 2 pi (15)  =

(30/4) pi ft  =

(15/2) pi ft =

7.5 pi ft
