x^2 - (3/2)x - 23/16  = 0

Add 23/16 to both sides

x^2 -(3/2)x   = 23/16

Take (1/2) the coefficient on x, square it and add to both sides

So (1/2)(-3/2) = -3/4   and squaring this, we have 9/16

x^2 - (3/2)x + 9/16 = 23/16 + 9/16   factor the left side and simplify

(x - 3/4)^2 = 2    take both roots of each side

x - 3/4 = ±√2      add 3/4 to both sides

x = ±√2 + 3/4

So, x = √2 + 3/4    or x = -√2 + 3/4

"d" is correct
