I don't know how to write an equation explicitly of y. I'm confused. Please help and explain. Thanks!

Basically , solve the equation for 'y'

x - 3/2 y = -12       add 12   and 3/2 y to both sides of the equation

3/2y = x+12            multiply both sides by 2/3

y = 2/3x + 8          This IS a function...it is the equation of a line...

Think you can now do the second one?   Try it......reply if you need more help...cheeky

I don't believe that I did it correctly. I got y=49-x².

Let's see:

y^2 - x^2 +1 = 50

y^2 = 50 - 1 + x^2

y = + - sqrt(49+x^2)           No it is not a function......there is two values of 'y' for a given x
