Four people can paint a house in six hours. How many hours would it take three people to paint the same house, assuming everyone works at the same rate?

Let the first right answer win!

8 hours:

Let's take the LCM of 4 and 3: it's 12. So, since 12 is 3 times 4, we divide (inverse proportions) by 2. So it will take 2 hours for 12 people. Now, we see that we divide by 4 to get to 3. Therefore, we multiply by 4 and get 8.

Is that correct?

to paint one house   requires    4 people x 6 hours  =  24 people hours  to paint the house

if you have only three people     it will take 8 hours      (to get 24 people hours)
