What is the x-coordinate of the point on the x-axis that is equidistant from points A(2,0) and B(0,6)?

The point will be of the form    x, 0

 

Use the distance formula between this point and EACH of the given points and equate them

 

sqrt [(x-2)^2 + 0^2]     = sqrt [  (x-0)^2  + (0-6)^2 ]             square both sides and simplify to

        x^2 -4x +4          =            x^2 + 36                            now subtract x^2 from both sides and continue to solve for 'x' in the coordinate pair (x,0)
