If 225 mL of water at 25°C is frozen at 0.0°C, what volume of ice is created? (Density of water at 25°C = 0.997 g/mL; density of ice at 0.0°C = 0.917 g/mL)

If 225 mL of water at 25°C is frozen at 0.0°C, what volume of ice is created? (Density of water at 25°C = 0.997 g/mL; density of ice at 0.0°C = 0.917 g/mL).

Density=Mass / Volume

.997 =Mass/225

Mass=225 x .997

Mass=224.325g- mass of 225 ml od water, which would be the mass of the ice.

.917 =224.325 / Volume

Volume=224.325 / .917

Volume=244.629 ml or cm^3-volume of the formed ice.

If you multiply VOLUME (ml) x DENSITY (g/ml) , you will get  g

So....how many grams of water @ 25 degrees do you start with?

225 ml  x  .997 g/ml  =  224.325 g

When it FREEZES it will be the same number of  g    BUT it will occupy a bigger VOLUME because the DENSITY of ICE is LESS  (This is why ice floats in water)

IF you DIVIDE  g  by VOLUME (ml)   you get DENSITY  g/ml

For THIS ice     224.325 g/  ? ml  = .917  g /ml    solve for  ?   =  244.629 ml  (which explains why your soda bottle burst when you placed it in the freezer!

EVENTUALLY, you may be able to realize that the answer would just be   225 x (.997/.917) = 244.629 ml

without having to go through all fo the other calcs !
