A scuba diver drops into the ocean from a height of 8 meters. From sea level, the diver starts his dive and swims straight down for 18 seconds at a steady speed of 1/2 meter per second. What is the difference between the diver's original elevation and his final elevation?

So since he's 8 meters above sea level he's already gone down 8 meters.

 

Next he travels downwards for 18 seconds going at 1/2 meter per second...

 

So he ends up 9 feet below sea level.

 

And use this data to solve the rest of this problem. It's simple enough.
