A shop gave a discount of $6 for every $40 spent. Mrs Ravi bought a dress and paid $117. What was the price of the dress before the discount?

x = origianl price

x - 6 * x/40  = 117

34/40 x = 117

x=117*40/34 = 137.65   dollars     Assuming prorated discounts  ( i.e.   6 discount for 40     3 discount for 20   etc)

If no prorated discount

x - 18 = 117

x = 135 dollars
