Triangle ABC is equilateral with side length 3. A point X is randomly chosen within ABC. What is the probability that X is no more than 1 unit away from vertex?

Point X must be in three small equilateral triangles, each with side length.  Each small equilateral triangle has 1/9 the area of the large equilateral triangle, so the probability is 3/9 = 1/3.

Please do not post solutions to this problem!  This is a homework problem, and using outside resources is considered cheating.

ABJ11, if you need help, then you should use the resources of the online class.

I do understand that you are trying to help, but please do not accuse people.

I was told once in a PM that I was copying problems off a website, more known as AoPS.

(I was, in fact, trying some advanced problems one of my math tutors gave me. The problems I post here are the ones I have pondered over for a long time.)

(I also am posting work on my questions when possible.)

Needless to say, your contribution to this website is deeply appreciated, however, I would like to ask people to help people out, but encourage them to find their own solution by simply posting hints.

Please ask yourself in the future whether this person may be genuine.

Agree! Wonderman, stop acting like some VIGILANTE POLICE bossing around the site. You are being really rude.

Seeing your history, all you ever did was just downgraded other people's solution.

AOPS or the class resources may not have explained the solution fully or wel enough, do not just assume that ABJ11 is cheating.

Thank you for illustrating my point, CalculatorUser!!!

But seriously, everyone just stop downgrading people!

(What does vigilante mean?)

sort of like a self-instated soldier or fighter, or someone that stops crime.

Someone like batman, no one ever told him to be a superhero, but he just became a superhero and started fighting the drug dealers like an unofficial cop.

wonderman, I looked at your answers history, and this is the only thing you ever post.

I think you could be a great help to some of these people, instead of just being a scold.

calculator user, that was an excellent observation.

Actually I was scrolling through some old posts, and Melody was the first one to see that.

I just used Melody's observation really.
