The whole area = (8m)^2 =  64m^2

 

And the area outside the shaded region is comprised of 4 quarter circles each with a radius of 4m

 

But the area of 4 identical quarter circles each with a radius of 4m  is the same as the the area of  a whole circle with the same radius....and this area is given by pi*(4m)^2  =  16pi m^2

 

So....the area of the shaded region =   [64 - 16pi]m^2 =  about 13.73m^2
