Bryan used 1/7 of his savings to buy a book. He spent 1/2 of the remaining money he had on a bag. What fraction of his savings was left?

Assume the total to be a fraction out of 1.

Let's see how much he spent in total first:

1/7 + 1/2 = 2 + 7/14

= 9/14

Now we can find what was left.

We can assume the 1 whole to be 14/14 to be the calculation 100 times easier.

14/14 - 9/14 = 5/14

And that is how much of his savings are left.

That's wrong you do 6/7 x 1/2

Savings --> 7 units

Remaining amount of money --> 7 - 1 = 6

Bag(1/2 of remaining amount of money) --> 6 / 2 = 3

Left --> 7 - 1 - 3 = 3

3/7 of his savings was left.
