An aquarium tank is 1/6 full of water. When 2 gallons of water are added, the tank becomes 1/2 full. What is the total capacity of the aquarium tank, in gallons?

If we set up an equation where x is the amount of gallons that the tank can hold, then 1/6x + 2 = 1/2x. Try solving from there, if you need anything, just ask :)

* I have answered this before *

The tank capacity is 24 gallons

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the tank capacity be c.

Then (1/6)c + 2 = (1/4)c, or (since the LCD is 12):

2c/12 + 24/12 =  3c/12, or

24/12 = c/12

Multiplying both sides by 12, we get:

24 = c

The tank capacity is 24 gallons.

You made a mistake in this step:

Then (1/6)c + 2 = (1/4)c, or (since the LCD is 12):

(1/4)c should be: (1/2)c

The correct answer should be: c = 6 gallons.
