One-third of Lemmie's toys exceeds one-fourth of the same toys by 18. What is half of the Lemmie's toys?
Let T be the total toys...and we have...
T/3 = T/4 + 18
T/3 - T/4 = 18
T/12 = 18 multiply both sides by 12
T = 216
(1/2)T = (1/2)(216) = 108 toys
x/3 = x/4 + 18
-x/4 -x/4
(x/3 - x/4) = 18
*multiply to change the denominators*
(4x/6 - 3x/6) = 18
x/6 = 18
6(x/6) = 6(18)
x = 108
Now we just halve that to get the number
108 ÷ 1/2 = 54
54 is the answer
