One-third of Lemmie's toys exceeds one-fourth of the same toys by 18. What is half of the Lemmie's toys?

Let T be the total toys...and we  have...

 

T/3  =   T/4 + 18

 

T/3 - T/4  =   18

 

T/12   =   18              multiply both sides  by   12

 

T  =  216

 

(1/2)T  = (1/2)(216)  =    108 toys

x/3 = x/4 + 18

-x/4     -x/4

(x/3 - x/4) = 18

*multiply to change the denominators*

(4x/6 - 3x/6) = 18

x/6 = 18

6(x/6) = 6(18)

x = 108

Now we just halve that to get the number

108 ÷ 1/2 = 54

54 is the answer
