a and b are the legs of the triangle and c is the hypotenuse

Keep in mind that the Pythagorean Theorem only works on right triangles

Replacing a with 12 and c with 144 we get $12^2 + b ^2 = 144^2$

which becomes $144+b^2 = 20736$

Now we subtract 144 from 20736 and get $b^2 = 20592$

so $b = \sqrt{20592}$ which is about 143.499128...

Rounding that to the nearest tenth we get 143.5

So the answer is 143.5 inches
