A rectangle in the coordinate plane is shown below.  A line with slope 2 splits this rectangle into two regions with equal area.  What is the y-intercept of this line?

 

The rectangle has coordinates (-1,-1), (-1,1), (1,1), and (1,-1).

The rectangle with these coordinates is centered at the origin, with side length 2. Note that any equation y = mx will bisect the area of the square, meaning that essentially the line y=mx will actually go through the origin of the entire graph. 

 

As seen in the image below. 

Thus, the y intercept is essentially just 0.
